Penny Arcade nails the PSP

Penny Arcade puts it perfectly:
...If you want to know whether or not the Playstation Portable is good, it's a topic beyond debate. It isn't "good." It's important.

We have a relationship to the future that is odd, in that we are constantly trying to create the preconditions for events we expect to happen. We collaborate with linear time to engineer outcomes. There are, however, coordinates in this progression which serve as milestones of a sort: points we can refer to and declare as evidence of forward momentum. Holding the device made it clear. The "future" envisioned by my eight year old self has arrived. Now, we must invent new futures.

PSP Day 1.5

This morning I went to EBGames and exchanged my unopened copy of Twisted Metal for Lumines. I bought Twisted Metal to try out the online playing, but I've been reading that the online servers are still having troubles. Lumines is getting great reviews even though it just looks like modern Tetris. Tetris was pretty addictive, though, and was probably the killer app for the Original GameBoy.

I got up early this morning to download some movies from http://www.connect.com/psp/index.html to my PSP. I found their flash tutorial on how to download movies kind of confusing. The pdf version at http://www.connect.com/psp/tutorial/tutorial.pdf was much clearer. I downloaded a bunch of trailers, a Speed Racer episode, and an ABC News clip. These took longer than I expected over my dsl connection, but their server might be getting hammered.

The process to get movies on your PSP is pretty clunky, which is surprising considering how elegant everything else is about the PSP. For some reason the movies to under a folder called \MP_ROOT\100MNV01 under the root of the memory stick. I would have expected it under something like \PSP\movies to match all the other media, but that's not the case. Also, it seems that the movies have to follow that strange naming convention (MPVC0043.mp4), which is very odd. It seems like movie playing was tacked on at the last minute and doesn't have the polish of the downloaded music or pictures. Kind of annoying, but I'll probably write something to automate this soon, if someone hasn't already done it.

At the train station, I sat on a bench fiddling with my PSP underneath a huge ad for the PSP, which probably looked pretty funny. On the train I watched a bunch of the stuff I downloaded. Picture quality was excellent. The option to choose the onscreen movie dimensions was a little tricky at first, but pretty quick once I got the hang of it. I didn't even bother trying the included headphones and used some massive over-ear Sony headphones that I have. Still, for watching movies on a train, it was still pretty tough to hear with the volume all the way up. Those headphones are open-back, though, which doesn't help. I have a pair of closed-back Aiwa headphones in my cube that block out much more sound, which I'll try on my way home tonight.

I watched the trailers and Speed Racer at an accelerated / tivo /speedwatching rate, and then watched some more of Spiderman2. I forgot how great a movie that was. I need to be careful what kinds of things I watch on my PSP. With the great visuals and some nice headphones, it's a surprisingly immersive viewing experience. I need to keep from laughing too much out loud. And no ripped movies that are tearjerkers. I don't want to start welling up with a bunch of people looking at me.

At work I spent most of the morning demoing my PSP to everyone and answering questions about it. People see it and are just blown away. I could have taken orders for it right there. I expected people to balk at the $250 cost, but everyone was jumping all over it. They said they paid more for their iPod which didn't play movies or games. It's interesting how many people don't know about the PSP. Sony did an interesting thing with this launch; there wasn't a huge media blitz leading up to it. Most of the people who bought one that I talked to are either geeks that follow this sort of thing or heard about it through word of mouth. I've been reading that the ads and commercials for the PSP are going to start bombarding everyone right after launch to maintain the hype.

Well, gotta run. Tonight I'm getting together with Russ to play some multiplayer PSP games, so I'm sure I'll have more to report tomorrow.

PSP Day 1

I figured I would log my experience with my new PSP just in case it's useful for anyone else who just got one or is thinking about getting one. I've been reading a bunch of msgboards and people are running into problems, so maybe I'll stumble upon something useful.

Also, this type of log is always funny to look at 6 months or a year down the road and makes you wonder what the hell were you thinking at the time. I'm always up for a laugh at my own expense to kick my future ego down a notch. [Hey future self! [waves] You're looking tubby, how 'bout losing some weight?]

I was thinking a bit about the PSP last night and, how, in the past, I would never consider buying something like this. I used to drive a car to and from work, but now that I spend two hours a day on a train, my life has totally changed. It's a completely different lifestyle that I really didn't comprehend before while I was driving all the time.

The main thing I spend cycles on these days is "what do I do with these two hours a day I spend on the train?". How can I keep myself entertained or productive? My GPRS phone is ok for reading blogs, lurking in chatrooms, and playing texas holdem'. My laptop is good for coding and watching dvds, but isn't really practical when there's someone sitting in the seat next to me. So the PSP looks like a great device for commuters like me...

The playstation.com msg boards look like they're full of people reporting dead pixels on their new PSPs, but there's also this weird war going on with the Nintendo msg boards, and both sides seem to be trying to cause trouble on the others' forums. I'm extremely happy with my screen, I haven't seen any dust underneath or dead pixels yet, so I'm happy.

The first thing that blows you away about the PSP when you turn it on is the screen. The hype was justified about this screen, it's THAT good. Even detractors and negative reviews said the screen was amazing, and they're right. Unfortunately, I find that the vocabulary from my puny Ivy League undergraduate degree isn't adequate to do this screen justice. I'm thinking about pursuing a graduate degree just to come up with the proper hyperbole worthy of it.

When I first turned my PSP on and navigated though the setup, my thoughts jumped to movies like Minority Report, Blade Runner, Total Recall, and I, Robot. Futuristic movies where you think to yourself, "they did a good job with the special effects, editing, or cgi in that scene". I felt like I was holding in my hand something produced by Hollywood effects artists.

Then I went through a bunch of the menu options and explored around. The navigation surprised me at first, but it was a breeze after a couple of minutes and felt totally intuitive. I formatted my 512M Memory stick, which was a piece of cake. The only hurdle in my initial setup was getting Wifi to work. It takes a really, really long time to enter a 26 character WEP key. Ones and Zeroes are especially hard. I thought you might be able to enter numeric characters on the virtual keypad by holding it down for a few seconds, but that was not the case, I had to keep pressing the virtual keypad button to cycle through the characters. Holding it down just cycles through them very fast. This isn't bad for 2-9, but it seems like all the special characters are mapped to the One and Zero and it takes forever. I found the text entry method they used in Wipeout Pure to enter your profile to be much faster.

After getting Wifi setup, I played one game of Wipeout Pure and my fiance played one. Kind of fun, just ok, a little tricky to steer. Maybe it's better multiplayer.

Then we watched the beginning of Spiderman2, which was incredible. It's funny, I read a bunch of reviews that said the PSP was a good game device, but not much else. I totally disagree with this. For me, the games are secondary, it's all about the movie watching, and this is where I think the PSP shines. Not necessarily buying UMDs, which I doubt I will, but watching downloaded and coverted bittorrents.

To be continued...
