Geek TV

Well it looks like Enterprise is not going to be saved by the fan movement. I've got mixed feelings about this show, so I'm not sure how I feel about its cancelation. My fiance watches it, so I usually end up watching it too. The episodes have actually gotten better this season, but I probably won't miss it.(except I do like seeing beagles on starships :) )

I recently made a big change to my lifestyle and cut out most of the tv shows that I used to watch. I'm down to about 5 hours a week now, and it's great. So now I'm debating whether I should add any new shows once Enterprise disappears. I read a couple of blogs recently that made me think about geeky tv shows, kwc on Mythbusters and Troutgirl on Numbers.

I've watched Mythbusters a few times, and I think it's a great show. Not sure about Numbers, though, the commercials for it look terrible, but it's possible there's a disconnect between the people making the show and the people makine the commercials.

Regardless, it seems like a pretty good era for geeks on television, which doesn't mesh well with my attempt to cut tv from my life. It's interesting to look at various geeky tv shows in the past compared to today. There's a lot fewer shows today that have that "Hollywood's interpretation of geeks" vibe compared to shows that are "made by geeks for geeks".

This reminded me of some really good and really bad geeky tv shows of the past, so here's my totally-biased list of geeky tv shows off the top of my head.

Good

  • X-files
  • Mythbusters
  • MacGyver
  • Star Trek: The Next Generation
  • Good Eats

Borderline (some good, some bad elements)

  • VR5
  • Whiz Kids
  • Sliders

Bad

  • Misfits of Science
  • Freakylinks
  • Star Trek DS9
  • Lone Gunmen spinoff

Never watched, but wish I had

  • Freaks and Geeks
  • Buffy
  • Babylon 5
